Aboriginal people are suffering from a legacy of centuries of dispossession, oppression and exploitation, says Bernadette Lahtail.

That legacy is reflected today in their high rates of mental illness, suicide, homicide, incarceration, unemployment and poverty, Lahtail said.

The executive director of the Creating Hope Society said today there are about 1.5 million aboriginal people in Canada. "You have to ask what happened to us."
