Pope Francis has called Canada’s apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana, back to Rome after three years as the Holy See’s ambassador to Canada.

While Canada awaits the appointment of a new nuncio, Msgr. Mauricio Bravi will be in charge of the apostolic nunciature in Ottawa.

In his last address to Canada’s Catholic bishops, Lopez Quintana told the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops plenary Sept. 23 Pope Francis was giving bishops “a powerful lesson on the qualities that should characterize the episcopal ministry.”

Lopez Quintana recounted what Pope Francis had told nuncios during a gathering in Rome last June on the qualities they should seek in prospective bishops.

The pope said to make sure the candidates they put forward are pastors, close to the people, the nuncio said.

He also emphasized that they should be characterized by a simplicity of lifestyle, avoiding spiritual worldliness.
