John Paul II ready to be venerable; beatification may followCATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE
VATICAN CITY - The members of the Congregation for Saints' Causes voted unanimously Nov. 16 to recommend that Pope Benedict formally recognize that Pope John Paul II heroically lived the Christian virtues, Italian newspapers reported. The Vatican did not deny or confirm that the vote took place. But Pope Benedict could sign the decree recognizing the heroic virtue of his predecessor and declare him venerable as early as December. Members of the saints' congregation meet regularly to study documentation on the causes of proposed saints. When the members are satisfied that the sainthood candidate lived an extraordinarily holy life, they recommend the pope sign the first decree. When the decrees recognizing the heroic virtues and a recognized miracle are signed, a date is fixed for the candidate's beatification. Some have speculated that for Pope John Paul this could come as early as next October. |
