Eparchy commemorates Ukrainian famine, Holodomor

Edmonton

The Edmonton Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy is organizing three special events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine or Holodomor.

The first event is a Hunger Banquet to be held Thursday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Youth Unity Centre. The evening meal will consist of plain broth soup and bread.

Father Borys Gudziak, rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine, will speak at the event - guiding participants in a reflection on the Ukrainian Famine. Proceeds from the Hunger Banquet will be presented to the Ukrainian Catholic University.

The second activity is a social outreach called Feeding the Poor of Today. It will be held province-wide Nov. 23 in remembrance of those who perished in the Holodomor.

This event calls for every Ukrainian Catholic parish in Alberta to feed the poor in their local community on Nov. 23 by organizing a pyrohy dinner, serving a meal at a local soup kitchen, handing out sandwiches and a hot coffee, donating food or money to a local charity, distributing food hampers to local families.

Finally a prayer service for the repose of the Holodomor victims will be held Nov. 24 at 12:30 p.m. at Edmonton's City Hall. Again, Gudziak, rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, will address the participants.
