Ukrainian Catholics, Orthodox hold dialogue
Special to the WCR Edmonton
Local bishops and clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox churches held an historic get-together Dec. 16 at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church.
The event was the first-ever Orthodox-Catholic dialogue in Edmonton. It had the theme Dialogue in Charity - Dialogue in Truth.
A morning prayer service in the church was followed by presentations by two speakers - Catholic Bishop Lawrence Huculak and Father Evan Lowig of the Orthodox Church in America.
Huculak spoke on the ecumenical activities of the Ukrainian Catholic Church since the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) and Lowig spoke on ecumenical activities of the Orthodox Church, especially in Ukraine.
Following lunch, there was an open discussion by the 41 participants in the day of dialogue.
Also taking part in the day were Archbishop John of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Western Canada and Bishop Serafim of the Canadian Archdiocese of the Orthodox Church in America.
Clergy attending, including sisters and seminarians, represented the Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox, Orthodox Church in America, and Greek Orthodox churches.
It was the hope of the participants that the dialogue, long overdue, would be the first of many.
