Pro-life is for all life's aspects

Thank you for the editorial of Nov. 1"A value for both life and dignity."

You are correct when you say "abortion as a political issue has done a lot to polarize voters." The operative word is issue. My experience with the word "issue" is that it separates the dialogue from the person. One can be very proactive for an issue, but somehow miss the person(s) that is attached to the "issue."

You tied together the importance of the life of the unborn and the dignity of the mother. When the dignity of both mother and child are included it pushes the boundaries of what is meant by pro-life. It makes no sense to protect the life of the unborn without considering at the same time the life of the mother and the support she will need to raise the child over all the years.

Too often protestors can slip into dualistic thinking - this is good - that is bad, without seeing the total reality. Pro-life means we are for life - life for the child and life for the mother; a life lived with dignity and respect.

Too often single mothers are condemned to a life of judgment, isolation and despair. If we took pro-life seriously we would be pushing politicians and the provincial government to provide financial support based on the "market basket" concept and not on the punishing, grinding financial support given at the present time.

It is not enough to "fight" for the unborn. . As believers in pro-life we must speak out and uplift life for all.

Applause for Bishop Henry's courage

Re:"Revenue Canada threatens Henry" (WCR. Nov. 1).

I have read with consternation your front page article by Ramon Gonzalez. It is with great appreciation for Bishop Henry and his determination not to be deterred by pressure and blackmail that I write these words. Where is the freedom of speech now in Canada?

Cannot a man speak his own mind anymore?

Bishop Henry is a real man to stand up for the Church's morals in this secularized country. He is a man of principle and he is admired for standing up against certain government decisions which are against Christian teachings and beliefs.

Cannot a man express his opinion without being accused of telling people how to vote? Are we becoming a country under the KGB?

Let there be justice and freedom in our great Canada.
