Alberta bishops: Catholic education an enduring gift
Dear Friends in Christ:
Catholic education is an enduring gift in our community and central to the mission of the Church. It is a responsibility of the whole Catholic community - parents, parishioners, Catholic teachers and administrators, politicians and even those who do not have children in Catholic schools. On Oct. 7, 2003 Alberta's Commission on Learning released its final report identifying 95 recommendations for enhancing education in Alberta. This document has been positively received by many stakeholders and is now forwarded to government for its consideration. As the recommendations are being studied by government, we urge all Catholics to work closely with their local school boards to fully understand the report and how it supports the common good of all Alberta's children. We strongly encourage careful discussion of the recommendations concerning shared school facilities, amalgamation of school boards and taxation. Implementation of these recommendations will require our vigilance and input. We must all study this report to ensure the enduring gift of permeated Catholic education is preserved for our children today and all generations of children. As we bless new schools across the province this year it is exciting to witness the community's understanding of the unique role of Catholic Education. With Catholic education we teach that all meaning is ultimately rooted in a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This is what it means to say that our schools must be places permeated by the Gospel. Albertans increasingly recognize the value of Catholic education and seek to participate in it, and this recognition is also reflected in the words of praise and encouragement by government representatives at the school openings. This is indeed something to celebrate on Catholic Education Sunday. Today, let us pray with thanks for Catholic education, for Catholic schools, for the teachers who mentor our students, for our children today and for future generations.
