Pope Francis has named Argentine Bishop Mario Aurelio Poli as his replacement in Buenos Aires.

Poli, 65, was auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires under Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio – now Pope Francis – for six years before being named bishop of Santa Rosa in 2008.

“He’s someone who was very close to Bergoglio,” said Norberto Padilla, law professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina and a Church observer.

Buenos Aires is one of the largest archdioceses in Latin America.
