Archbishop Paul-André Durocher of Gatineau, Quebec, has denounced recent acts of vandalism against a mosque in his diocese.

"As the leader of the Catholic Church in the Gatineau area, I deplore the acts of vandalism that have been committed against the Outaouais Islamic Centre and its faithful," Durocher said in a Jan. 6 statement.

"Every act of vandalism is an act of aggression not only against those whose property has been vandalized, but against society as a whole."

Durocher said he wanted "to assure our Muslim neighbours of my sympathy and solidarity."

The Islamic Centre has been vandalized four times in the last six months, including twice in the first week of January.
