SPECIAL TO THE WCR

St. Albert – This spring Archbishop Richard Smith will go to Nicaragua to visit the people and to see projects funded by Roots of Change Foundation and administered by FUNDACCO, its partner-organization in Nicaragua.

Two young students, Geoffrey Durocher and Aldo Esposito, and others from the St. Albert High School Mission Team also wished to go to Nicaragua during spring break.

Although it was not possible to fulfill this dream now, they organized the GSACRD Fundraiser Hockey Marathon which took place Feb. 23-24.

Geoffrey and Aldo, along with hardworking student council members, made presentations to St. Albert city council and used Facebook and YouTube to promote the 20-hour marathon.

Their enthusiasm and their strong desire to make a difference in Nicaragua helped them convince the mayor, a city councillor, nine members of the RCMP, and 60 students from St. Albert High School and Richard S.Fowler Catholic Junior High School to play hockey and collect pledges for Roots of Change.

They collected over $6,000 which they will give towards disaster relief for the region of Achuapa in Nicaragua which was devastated by torrential rains and flash floods last October.
