Sisters celebrate 50 years

Sisters Mary Beth McCurdy (left) and Sandra Barrett celebrated their 50th anniversaries of religious life together in Saint John, N.B., June 5 with two other Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception.

McCurdy, a native of Saint John, is SCIC congregational leader. In Edmonton during the 1980s and '90s, she served in parish, pastoral care, grief support and music ministries, particularly in St. Matthew and St. Agnes parishes. In 2008, she co-founded Sophia Recovery Centre in Saint John for women in recovery from addictions.

Barrett was SCIC congregational leader from 2002-10. Originally from Moncton, N.B., she was registrar of Newman Theological College in Edmonton from 1978-85. Both women were educators who earned bachelor of theology degrees from Newman College. Barrett recently received an honorary doctor of letters degree from St. Thomas University in Fredericton.
