Pilgrims seek healing in Lac St. Anne

As Sunday afternoon Mass ended July 17, Archbishop Sylvain Lavoie of Keewatin-Le Pas, Man., led his large congregation from the shrine to the shore of Lac St. Anne.

Standing on a stage near the shore, Lavoie welcomed the congregation to the blessing of the lake ceremony and praised the Lord for the beautiful 30C weather.

ST. ALBERT — The whole purpose of reconciliation is so our children and our children's children don't have to experience the same kind of pain that we did, says Basilian Father Daryold Winkler.

Speaking on forgiveness at a the fourth annual Directions on Aboriginal Ministry conference, Winkler, an aboriginal priest and academic from Ottawa, described reconciliation as a spiritual way of living that allows us to heal and move forward.

Residential schools' legacy still haunts

ST. ALBERT — The residential school system was a systemic sin that cannot be understood as separate from a broader colonial reality, says Gerry Kelly, a consultant on the residential school settlement.

Stressing that Canada's residential school system was entrenched in Canada's social policy, Kelly said, "We have to realize that we are dealing with a structural harm."

INUVIK, N.W.T. — Pictures tell stories. Stories tell us who we are. For 15-year-old Mary Masazumi the story falls into the category of mystery.

Her father Alfred is dead and there are no family photo albums at home in Fort Good Hope that stretch back into her father's childhood. Mary hoped to fill that gap pouring through binders of photos from the archives of the Diocese of Mackenzie-Fort Smith.

Alta. Knights raise $237,000 to renovate building at St. Mary's

CALGARY — Alberta's Knights of Columbus have raised about $237,000 for St. Mary's University College in Calgary.

"It took us a little over three years to raise the money. We had help from knights all over southern Alberta," said Leo Bunz who chaired Knights of Columbus fundraising committee. "We concentrated very heavily on the councils in southern Alberta for their donations."

Newman lays foundation for lay ministry

EDMONTON — A new online-based program and the reintroduction of an old program at Newman Theological College will prepare students for lay ministry.

The bachelor of theology program was intended to give students a basic understanding of theology and religious sciences and provide a foundation for pastoral leadership.

Building things has summed up Walter Domshy's whole life.

The TV cabinet, keyboard stand and most of the furniture within his west Edmonton home were handcrafted by him. He's built merry-go-rounds, sandboxes and seesaws that are still in use at school playgrounds. He also made many useable items, such as the votive candle stand, found at Annunciation Church.
