Youths welcome pope to WYD; he asks them to think about faith

MADRID — Welcomed to World Youth Day by a boisterous, flag-waving throng of hundreds of thousands of young people, Pope Benedict urged them to be strong, solid and think about their faith.

Pope Benedict walked through the Puerta de Alcala, a monumental arch symbolizing the entrance to the city, with young people representing Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Pope tells young to share their faith with the world

MADRID — Pope Benedict saw that 1.4 million young people could be buffeted by gusty winds and drenched by a driving rain and still fall silently to their knees to adore the Eucharist.

At the final Mass closing World Youth Day Aug. 21 in Madrid, the pope challenged the Catholic pilgrims to take that faith, make it grow and share it with the world.

NELSON, B.C. — When Bishop John Corriveau first took his post in the Diocese of Nelson he faced the challenge of ministering to a widely dispersed flock.

The diocese — which runs from Princeton, up to Golden, over to the Alberta border and down along the 49th parallel — stretches over highly mountainous terrain.
