EDMONTON – Joy Vasquez and his wife Judith have received a multitude of blessings during their 17 years of marriage. Judith was healed of a life-threatening illness and, despite the urgings of doctors to abort three of their pregnancies, all three babies avoided serious disabling conditions.
"When we got married in 1996, we pictured ourselves having a big family. We wanted to have seven children. But the doctors told us that Judith could not conceive. It would be impossible for her," said Joy Vasquez.
But one Easter evening, the couple got down on their knees and prayed. They asked the Virgin Mary to intercede for them, and bless them with a child.
"We knew that God had a special purpose for us, a special reason, a special goal. But we just didn't know what it was yet," he said.
The couple did, in fact, have a child. But in 2000, they faced more challenges. Judith was diagnosed with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Doctors said she would be lucky to live another two years.
"She suffered so much with severe pain in her body, and could hardly walk. Oftentimes, she had a hard time going to work. Seeing her like that was a great challenge for me. It was heartbreaking to see my wife in such pain," he said.
SERVING THE LORD
During their hard times, they turned to Couples For Christ and served in Youth For Christ. Despite working long hours at his day job, Joy Vasquez was determined to serve the Lord in his spare time.
"In three months' time serving Youth for Christ, Judith was freed from her illness. All of the physicians, they could not understand what happened. It was a miracle from God. With the love of God, my wife was healed," he said.
The Vasquezes were among more than 500 couples who attended the 2014 Couples For Christ Western Region Conference, July 11-13 in Edmonton.
The doctors again told the couple that Judith would not be able to have more children because of the steroids administered for her health ailments.
Contrary to what the doctors advised them, Judith became pregnant again. The Vasquez couple was advised to abort the pregnancy because the baby, even if he was to live, would have a poor quality of life. The child would have spina bifida (a birth defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord), Down syndrome and other health deficiencies.
"Who are we to ask the question to God, 'Why is this happening to us?' My husband and I remained faithful, and we relied fully on the Holy Spirit. We knew that God would never abandon us, and always remain faithful to us," said Judith.
IGNORED THE DOCTORS
In total, the couple had three pregnancies that were candidates for abortion. Every time, they disregarded the advice of their doctors and bore the children. Every child was born healthy, without the health complications that the doctors predicted.
"Judith and I have always believed that God will bless and protect those who serve him," said Joy Vasquez.
