I heard a story from a man who had been on a mission trip to an isolated tribe that had never before been evangelized. Their preaching had been so "successful" that they found themselves with a problem: the people lost their motivation to live their daily lives. Instead, they sat around and waited for Jesus to return.

Stealing from the poor bars you from heaven

I've been piecing together a bit of family history in the last while. It has to do with some farmland belonging to my grandparents that was, we were told as children, "lost to taxes." This was not an uncommon circumstance for young people in Saskatchewan early on in the Depression, but it seems that wasn't the whole story.

This Sunday's Gospel tells of Jesus teaching the disciples how to pray, how to ask the Father for what we need, trusting his goodness. He says, "Ask and it will be given you; search and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you."

The traditional statement of "food, water and shelter" as the three essentials to human life probably needs a revision. I would say that there are four essentials to human life: food, water, shelter and love.

My backyard is again filled with snow, the birds are eager at the feeder, and the icicles hang long and pointed off the eaves. It's hard to believe Easter is so near, that the Passion of our Lord is so soon to be remembered.

There is a parable told about a child who is afraid of the dark. The parent reassures the little boy, saying that he is not alone, that God is always with him and therefore he need not be afraid. The little boy responds, "But I want God with skin on him."
