I must confess that I haven't spent a great deal of time thinking about the principles behind altars and ambos. My first conscious consideration of altars came when I was struggling to understand homophones – words that sound the same but have different spellings.

Today – today I choose to indulge myself. At four score years and four, I presume to take a stand on that thin collection of privileges earned by age. I make a claim for wisdom: T. S. Eliot's wisdom – the wisdom of humility. I find shelter in his claim that "The only wisdom we can hope to acquire is the wisdom of humility."

There are many theories as to why the murder trial of Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell is getting sparse media coverage. But it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the decades-long government cover-up of Gosnell's grotesque abortion clinic is being perpetuated by the media.

My first full-time job started in the mid-1970s at the Archdiocese of Regina, setting up a social action office in Archbishop Charlie Halpin's offices on 13th Avenue. Here I met, for the first time, the Sisters of Service, who had their offices on nearby Cameron Street.

A murder trial is playing out in Pennsylvania. In 2011, Philadelphia late-term abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell was charged with the murder of seven infants born alive after botched abortions. (Three of those charges were later dropped for lack of evidence.) Gosnell was also charged with the murder of Karnamaya Mongar, 41, who died of a medication overdose during an abortion at his clinic.
