Catacombs bear witness to a young martyr

It is only a few days ago that I stood in a narrow corridor of the catacombs of St. Callixtus at Rome. The air there is damp and cold, ceilings glisten with crystals of condensed moisture, brown tufa stone is stained with age. Dark walls are pierced with surprisingly slim, shadowy cavities which once housed bodies of Christians of the first ages, the ages of bloody persecutions alternating with brief periods of uneasy peace with the surrounding pagan world.

The readings of Trinity Sunday should give assurance to all who suffer and long to be with Christ. The First Reading was from Deuteronomy 4. It reminds us of how God has been with humanity from the beginning. God has always been involved in human affairs and desires a relationship with people. He has not forsaken us.

I read an article that when we find attractiveness in others, we should recognize and appreciate their attributes as gifts of God. I find the wife of one of our friend couples attractive in that we share professional occupations, similar backgrounds and dispositions but also physically.

Vatican warns against nun’s book on sexual ethics

The Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith warned June 4 that Mercy Sister Margaret Farley’s 2006 book, Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics, contains “erroneous propositions” on homosexual acts, same-sex marriage, masturbation and remarriage after divorce that could cause confusion and “grave harm to the faithful.”
