PITTSBURGH — Although social media is the rage in today's world of communication, one Catholic bishop offered an impassioned speech in support of Catholic print publications.

During a panel discussion June 23 at the 2011 Catholic Media Convention, Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik said Catholic newspapers and magazines continue to be the best way to reach people in the pews.

Yoga opens conduits to connect with God

Sister Margaret Perron, a Religious of Jesus and Mary, trades her habit and rolls out her mat for Father Tom Ryan's yoga and Christian meditation class at St. Paul's College in Washington.

Carefully choreographed yoga-prayers allow participants to "embody a prayer," Ryan tells his classes. He said they may have been praying a prayer their whole life, but by saying the prayer in conjunction with different postures, they can more fully understand and appreciate the words they are saying.

'Papabile' speculation pot is stirred

VATICAN CITY — The most amusing headline to greet Cardinal Angelo Scola's appointment as archbishop of Milan appeared in a British newspaper: "Pro-Vatican cardinal to head Milan church."

One can pretty well assume that all of the candidates considered for this office would describe themselves as "pro-Vatican." The Italian hierarchy is not full of papal critics or ecclesiastical rebels.

Youth light up Italian parish, prepare to head for WYD in Spain

EDMONTON — The young people of Santa Maria Goretti Parish were not as active in the Church as youth of the past had been. In response, a youth group was launched to get them more drawn into parish life.

"We just wanted to get more youth motivated about our church," said Rosa Bruno, a youth group member.

Bishops take pastoral approach to same-sex attraction

OTTAWA — Canada’s Catholic bishops have published a pastoral letter on ministry to young people with same-sex attraction that warns against “watering down” Church teaching yet shows sensitivity to the challenges faced by homosexuals.

The eight-page booklet prepared by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (CCCB) doctrinal commission released June 27 on its website (www.cccb.ca) comes when publicly-funded Catholic schools are under pressure from the Ontario government’s equity polity.

Family Life Conference: A festival of Catholic Life

LAC STE. ANNE — Hundreds of Catholic families spent the Canada Day long weekend sharing with each other, barbecuing, praying, attending Mass and listening to renowned speakers from Canada and the United States.

The Lac Ste. Anne pilgrimage site was teeming with activity as more than 2,000 Catholics, about 500 families, from across Alberta and Western Canada descended on the site for the 16th annual Family Life Conference June 30-July 3.

Ottawa's tough new laws won't cut crime

Prime Minister Stephen Harper promised during the recent election campaign to pass all of his government's crime legislation in one package of bills within the first 100 sitting days of the new Parliament. In the June 3 Speech from the Throne, the Conservative government promised to "move quickly to reintroduce comprehensive law-and-order legislation to combat crime and terrorism."

Corpus Christi feast is based on the power of the Word

Last month, I gave an address at the Atlanta Eucharistic Congress, which is one of the most impressive gatherings in the American Catholic Church. Roughly 30,000 people came together, on the eve of the feast of Corpus Christi, to celebrate the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
